Light Pollution

As towns become increasingly dense and lighting options more affordable, there is a notable increase in the amount of light pollution across the state and around the world. Not only is light pollution—which includes excessive lighting and blue-hued LED lighting—bad for wildlife and for human health, it also contributes to the climate crisis. With the help of DarkSky International and DarkSky Massachusetts, Green Maynard aims to educate residents and businesses about the harms of light pollution.

Protecting Wildlife from Rat Poison

An alarming number of raptors (including owls and hawks), foxes, coyotes, and even household pets have been sickened or killed after preying on rodents poisoned with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). ARs interfere with the activation of Vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting, causing mice and rats to experience internal bleeding over the course of several days before dying. Predators who eat the rodents can fall victim to the same fate.

Thankfully there are safer and more effective options. The town voted overwhelmingly to restrict ARs on municipal property in May 2025; in October 2025, the town voted to support a "home rule" petition, which enables the town to ask the state legislature for the authority to enact AR regulations on private property. Many other towns have filed home rule petitions with the goal of encouraging the state government to ban them statewide.

Protecting the Assabet River

Began as a task force of Green Maynard, The Maynard Assabet River Coalition (MARC) comprises local organizations and individuals working together to bring the natural beauty of the Assabet River to the forefront of the Town of Maynard. Through education, advocacy, and stewardship—and in close collaboration with OARS and the Maynard Conservation Commission—MARC aims to protect and promote local wildlife and biodiversity, improve climate resilience, and elevate the river as a scenic, recreational, and economic asset for the Maynard community for generations to come.

Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere

Developers are planning a 500,000-square-foot expansion at Massport-owned Hanscom Field for private luxury jet use. This immense expansion has the potential to single-handedly undercut the total combined greenhouse gas reductions that Massachusetts and our cities and towns are working to achieve.

Private jet expansion goes against the urgent calls from UN climate scientists, U.S. Climate Goals, and our MA Climate Goals. Stop Private Jet Expansion (SPJE), a coalition of state and local organizations, is leading the fight to prevent this expansion at Hanscom. You can help by calling Governor Maura Healey’s office to share your concerns.
